Ideological and Cultural Subversion
One strange thing we see in Christianity is people rediscovering one's faith in prison is not an uncommon story to hear of. Before we make judgements like "but he's a criminal, he must not be sincere" remember that Jesus himself said "I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." If you never sinned, then you would never have to repent. The fact that repentance is central to Christianity shows that Christianity acknowledges that everyone, including Christians, are sinners. In Catholicism, we also have the Sacrament of Confession for that exact reason. Again, if we weren't sinners in need of forgiveness, then Confession would be pointless. Nobody goes to Confession to tell the priest about nice things, they go to tell the priest about the bad, even terrible, things they've done in life.
